Experience Nature

Beautiful by nature.

Gaschurn and Partenen lie at the far end of the Montafon — where three mountain ranges meet and nature is at its most untouched. Silvretta, Rätikon and Verwall form an amphitheatre of three-thousand-metre peaks, high-alpine lakes, protected moors and wild valleys. Every nature experience on this page starts right from the Monika or is just a few minutes away.

Turquoise Silvretta reservoir on the Bielerhöhe in the Montafon

Silvretta-Bielerhöhe

A high-alpine lake landscape at 2,037 m — and the must-do excursion from Gaschurn. From Partenen, the Silvretta High Alpine Road climbs up to the Bielerhöhe in just 10 minutes, one of Austria's most beautiful mountain roads. At the top, the turquoise Silvretta reservoir awaits you, nestled between glaciers and three-thousand-metre peaks. The lakeside walk (around 2 hours, easy) is perfect for families, and the mountain restaurant right by the dam invites you in for a break with panoramic views. Next door lies the Vermunt reservoir — a little quieter, just as impressive.

Waterfall on the wild stream trail in the Montafon

Garneratal

One of the most unspoilt side valleys in the Alps — and it begins right in Gaschurn. The Garneratal is a wild, untouched valley head with roaring mountain streams, old alpine pastures and the cosy Garnera mountain hut as your destination. Especially popular as an e-bike-and-hike combo: take the e-bike up to the alp, then continue on foot into the rocky landscape. The wild river scenery along the way is among the most striking in the entire Montafon.

Wiegensee with wooden boardwalk — high moor in the Montafon

Wiegensee — Austria's Most Beautiful Place

Austria's Most Beautiful Place 2021 — voted on the ORF show "9 Plätze – 9 Schätze". This protected high moor sits above 1,900 m overlooking Partenen and can only be reached on foot (around 1.5–2 hours). Floating-grass surfaces that took millennia to grow drift across the still moorland lake — so fragile that wooden boardwalks were built for hikers. Reach it from Partenen via the Vermunt cable car or as a hike. It's a dream in autumn especially: when the larches turn golden, they reflect in the moorland lake — the very image that won over all of Austria.

Cow by a mountain stream on the Alpe Nova in the Montafon — Natura 2000

Natura 2000

A European conservation area covering the upper Montafon around Gaschurn and Partenen — a hotspot of alpine biodiversity. Golden eagles circle regularly above the slopes just over Gaschurn, and you'll hear marmots whistling within the first few metres of any hike. Add alpine orchids, chamois and a flora that has stayed especially rich thanks to its protected setting.
